Myspace and Mutantfest...

tell me how do people feel about bulletins running around on this-??? some say bah some say whateva'--- good attention or bad?---with good intentions though i am sure none the less---

Re:Myspace and Mutantfest...

i think it's ok. it's a fairly closed network. I would be more weary of other publicity like handbills and posters as they can fall onto the wrong eyes.

i want AMF to be more diverse and no less secret. a delicate balance....[/i]

i agree that posting on

i agree that posting on myspace is probably ok. i also agree that i worry more about handbills than myspace. i am more worried about the local law enforcement who aquire flyers than the feds who would be scouting myspace.

Fuck Myspace

NOT OK.
Why do you feel the need to fucking promote?
Just spread the word, word of mouth. Make cheap black and white copies if you must...put the phone number and mutantfest.org on there somewhere. Thats all you need. Dont worry about local law enforcement or feds. Just dont use myspace , tribe or any of that bullshit to promote the mutant fest.

not good.

definately not good. just not.

Why not just call foxx

Network since they own my space anyway.

not for myspace

i agree, lets leave myspace OUT of it. enough people are going to show up. word of mouth and keeping it on the DL is what is needed to keep mutant fest from being overrun by creepies.

FUCK, IT'S ALREADY OVERRUN BY CREEPIES!

mUTANT FEST HAS BEEN GOING SINCE 1997 RIGHT? THATS tEN YRS NOW, fIRST ONE WAS IN oREGON OUTSIDE OF lOWELL IN A ROCK PIT. cREEPIES MAKE THE FEST WHAT IT IS! ALL SICK AND MENTALLY FUCKED CRASS DEGENERATES ARE WELCOMED! dONT START THINKING THAT THERE WILL BE NO SLUMMERS CAUSE WHERE THERE IS ILLNESS THERE IS A CROWD TO WATCH. ALL FREAKS ARE WELCOMED, VIOLENCE NO! HATRED, IF NEEDED TO CONTROL LOVE,PHYSICAL ABUSE IS NOT WELCOME SO IF YOU CANT KEEP COOL DONT SHOW UP! OHHH THE HORROR THE HORROR THE HORROR. gUSKE IS KILLING THE KING AS WE SPEAK, SEE THE BLOOD ON HIS HANDS IN THREE WEEKS. LOVE TO aSYSTOLGOD.

i agree..

that we might as well give it to faux news, they own myspace so they would pick up on the story in no time.

NO MYSPACE

NO PROMOTION.
IT ISNT NEEDED ANYMORE.
WORD OF MOUTH
KEEP IT ANALOG
ITS A FREE PARTY
MORE PEOPLE = MORE PROBLEMS

Make fliers and posters. Pass them out.

People whine and scream about how promotion will wreck the festival.
This is crap.
Remember Shasta when thousands of glossy fliers went out?
Everyone freaked the fuck out.
But what was the end result?
A very well attended Mutantfest with all the right kind of people.

More people is better. Think of us as an outreach program for the musically challenged. We can convert cheezy raver kids. I've seen it happen.

Also, targeted promotion will be a good thing. Promote to people at other festivals. They already know how to party in the woods. We can show them a more unique festival than they are used to and they will be grateful.

Or there is the alternative.
Lots of Empty Dancefloors.

Lords of Empty Dancefloors

Flyers are OK, just dont spend any money on them! Scam black and white flyers from office depot, kinkos or wherever.
Targeted promotion is a good concept. Random myspace bulletins does nothing of any value. Self-sustainability, Low impact camping and individual autonomy should be encouraged in any kind of promo - "bring your own water, food, survival equipment etc...leave no trace, pack out all that you bring ...etc" - this will weed out the weak and lecherous. AMF should definately not be promoted as just a free for all party in the woods, if too many folks come unprepared, their presence becomes a huge burden on the soundsystems and camps that already work far too hard for free (i.e. by leaving heaps of trash that the last camps there have to haul out).
Mutantfest is a party but it is also good preparation for life after all urban centers are destroyed.

As an aside :
A much better and effective use of mutant energy right now would be to scout. If you live in the northwest (bay area up to the canadian border),and you like the AMF, it is your civic duty to help find a site... its only 45 days away as of right now. This means YOU! Take a weekend, get a BLM map, go to it. It might even be enjoyable.
http://www.mutantfest.org/msg/forum/17 <- Use this forum to co-ordinate scouting activities.
The question of whether or not to promote and how much is moot if there is no optimal space for the event to take place. Many people think that a site will be found regardless of whether or not they are involved... this is not the case.

So eloquent..
Don't be such a Negative Nancy, man!
Theres always going to be someone you don't like at any festival.
Mutantfest is hands down the best festival in the Northwest. There are many, many people who put alot of their personal time and effort to make this festival as amazing as it is.
Being someone who has attended for more than a few years, I don't get it so much, but I did in the beginning and I see it happening to other people- Theres this terrible elitist vibe all over the place as the festival itself grows larger and more and more people show up every year.
Yeah, I know, if we wanted to be at Rainbow, we'd be there instead. And I know there are reasons for that, but with the amazing thing that we've got, that so many people have collaborated on and influenced positivley (wether direct or indirectly) - we should be willing to share that.
Think about all those Highschoolers from Susanville last year- I'm sure they had never seen anything like us- and think about how we may have influenced those kids in a positive way.

Don't be a jerk! Have an open mind and don't put so much energy into being negative toward the fest.
Grow up!

On the subject of Myspace:
Word of mouth/this forum is the way to go. No need to involve such commercial interests as Myspace/Newscorp. We can do it ourselves!

Um, Yes. Fliers.

Hey Shitfido, (if that is your real name.....)

Hate to Fart in your Om Circle, but I printed some.
(B&W Kinkos scam of course.)

By the way, it's not the participants we promote to that fuck up a Mutantfest, It's the Drainbow hippies who haven't the sense to cover their own feces, and leave tons of trash behind. They are what you get when you Don't promote.
I'm gonna keep trying to bring new talented musicians, DJs and artists to come, by word of mouth, and by promoting at other good festivals.

If new people bother you, and you are convinced that "this is the year
mutant fest goest into the toilet", you can always go to rainbow instead. They don't flier.

strategic promotion

i think it's important that mutantfest doesn't grow too fast, because of the decentralized nature of the fest it requires a high percentage of participants who know what to do without being told. if there is an overwhelming influx of newbies, we may not be able to educate them fast enough..the most stressful year i can remember was 2000, that was the year SPIN magazine listed AMF in their summer festivals section. there was an unusually large influx of yahoos that year and required quite a bit of damage control. i think promotion is ok, but i wouldn't be totally over the top with it. some people on myspace have hundreds and thousands of "friends" many of whom they don't really know,,on the other hand some people are very selective about who is on their mailing list...i think there is potential for disaster there, but only if people are excercising bad judgement. but in any case, if people are ready to work hard and be ready for a possible swarm of people on the weekend, it could work out to be very fun.
