One Night Only - The Sunward Spike 8/7
The Umbrella Theatre Company from San Francisco
presents
The Sunward Spike
a musical drama in two acts
The Sunward Spike is an interspecies fable of a quest to awaken the world from its persistent state of somnambulance. A naïve and impressionable young Octopus must fight the spell cast upon him and the rest of the world by a manipulating, soothsaying Master Lyle. Sermonizing from his elementary school classroom, he lulls his congregation into a torpor with his Theory of Uniformity. Perilously close to total submission to the headmaster, the Octopus is fortuitously summoned by a bizarre and beautiful satellite, who encourages him to embark on a journey to find the saving clarity.
Though somewhat confused, but very much in love, the courageous cephalopod knows he has something he must accomplish, and his boisterous spirit leads him on many an adventure. The characters he encounters along the way – an ancient revolutionary, a tortured professional songwriter, and various interplanetary travelers, only provide him with the vaguest clues as to what has led to this deteriorating state of affairs, and what could possibly be done about it.
The world and the heavens appear bound for static isolation when an astonishing catastrophe strikes, inciting the battle between weather and architecture.
Will the Sunward Spike destroy us all?
Will a mere jealous rage lead to the downfall?
Is there another story lurking in these depths?
The Umbrella Theatre Company is a collective of musicians and artists based in San Francisco. This is their second production, based upon songs from the similarly titled album The Sunward Spike.
