possible dates & locations for AMF XIII (2009)
Now is the time to start thinking and talking about next year.
Suitable locations allow cars to park off dirt roads and campfires the
entire time of the festival. (No chance of "Extream" fire danger during
the festival.)
If July or August dates are selected, there must be a commitment from
multiple crews to research and scout locations that will be wet enough
in July or August to not have extreme fire danger nor the likelyhood
of heavy rain. Possible areas would be far to the north, such as Mt.
Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and Olympic National Forest (both in
North Eastern Washington) or at uncomfortably high elevations that
never completely warm up or dry out.
AMF is often scheduled to start on the Monday of the segment containing
the full moon. Though a few times we have scheduled AMF to include the
new moon.
Here are the three summertime 11 day segments in 2009 that include the
full moon.

please do so and report back here.

June 2009, AMF XIII
Yay to June dates!
This year was held in the beautiful and amazing Ochoco forest that would otherwise have been unacceptable as a location had it been mid July or August. As it was, we had snow melt running off in creeks for water, and lush grass and forests to camp and play in, we even got a bit of thunder and lightning and a small amount of rain (and I thought that was quite nice!)
If visiting this same location in mid July to August one might notice the creeks dry, the grasses dried and wilted, and the overall vulnerability to forest fires much greater.
Pros to June:
It's during summer solstice, much less worries of extreme fire dangers, allows the fest to possibly be held in a wider selection of more central NW locations (not just far north).
Fire is of the largest concern, as we can read in the news now, only weeks after this years festival there are numerous forest fires, some in very close proximity to locations that hosted previous years festivities during late July/August(ie: Shasta and S. Oregon)
I only remember one fest being hosted during the new Moon phase, and from my experience that year there seemed to be added difficulties in making the rounds through the forest for participants, and the lack of moonlight generally took away from the overall richness of the mood during the night time activities.
poll for dates of AMF 13
There is a poll up so y'all can indicate when you'd like AMF 13 to be. The poll is at www.spaz.org on the main page, on the right, halfway down. Go fucking represent. If you have a strong preference, post a comment there after you vote. That will help other people make an informed decision.

Keep in mind that Olympia is
Keep in mind that Olympia is something like a 14 hour drive from, say, Oakland, where alot of long-time mutants hail from. North Eastern Washington is a far way away even from Eugene or Portland- Gas is expensive, and this may hinder the ability for the willing to scout the area, unless they're from Spokane, which isn't exactly somewhere where many mutants live.
